International Courts, the EU and the ECtHR

An ICJ, PCIJ or ITLOS decision cites the case name with the parties in italics, the phase and decision type in brackets, and the report — or, unreported, the case number and date (rr 4.3.1–4.3.2). Keep the parties’ own separator: v for a unilateral application, an oblique for a special agreement.

Criminal tribunal decisions cite Prosecutor v the defendant, the decision type, the case number and the date (r 4.3.3). WTO reports carry their document numbers and both circulation and adoption dates (r 4.3.4). Arbitral awards cite the administering body and case number (r 4.3.5).

EU legislation cites its full name as it appears on the document, then the OJ reference: year in square brackets, the series letter closed up to the issue and page (r 4.4.1). Later footnotes may use a defined short form, or simply Reg or Dir with the number. EU court decisions cite the case number, the name in italics, and the ECLI (r 4.4.2).

An ECtHR decision cites the case name, any phase and decision type, [GC] or [Committee] for the formation, the application number and the date (r 4.4.4). Commission-era decisions cite their report series — CD, DR, EHRR or the Yearbook (r 4.4.5).
